Nicole Kidman has initiated legal proceedings to end her 19-year marriage with Keith Urban, marking an unexpected conclusion to their high-profile relationship that united two entertainment powerhouses. The 58-year-old Academy Award-winning actress filed for divorce from the 57-year-old Grammy-winning country musician in a Nashville court, citing “marital difficulties and irreconcilable differences.”
The couple, who share two teenage daughters, 17-year-old Sunday Rose and 14-year-old Faith Margaret, have submitted a comprehensive marriage dissolution and child-care plan for court approval. The parenting plan emphasizes fostering a positive and nurturing environment for the children post-divorce, with both parents committed to maintaining a healthy relationship with them.
As per the agreement, Kidman is set to become the primary residential parent, with the daughters spending 306 days a year with her and 59 days with Urban. The couple, each earning over $100,000 monthly, has waived any requests for child-care or spousal support. The asset division is structured to maintain a fair distribution of joint assets, with individual ownership of respective work-related copyrights and royalties.
The divorce process, which began with the signing of the parenting plan by Urban on August 29 and Kidman on September 6, will follow Tennessee law, requiring a minimum of 90 days for finalization. Despite their public acknowledgment of marital challenges, there were no clear indications of an impending split between the Australian-born couple, who met in 2005 and tied the knot in 2006.
Kidman, known for her acclaimed film roles including “Moulin Rouge” and “The Hours,” has also garnered success in television, winning Emmy Awards for her performances in “Big Little Lies” and “Nine Perfect Strangers.” Urban, a prominent figure in country music, recently concluded his High and Alive World Tour in Canada, showcasing his enduring popularity in the music industry with multiple Grammy and ACM Awards to his name.
