RCMP reported the arrest and subsequent release of an individual linked to a protest camp at Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, B.C. The arrest followed an alleged arson and assault at a neighboring property coinciding with the arrival of police and Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) officials to enforce warrants related to the culling of over 300 ostriches due to avian flu detection at the farm last December.
Located approximately 100 kilometers east of Kelowna, the farm has contested the culling order in court, garnering substantial support from individuals who perceive the order as a case of governmental overreach, some of whom have ties to previous movements like the Freedom Convoy.
Katie Pasitney, the farm’s spokesperson, has emphasized peaceful protest in her Facebook videos, dissociating the farm from any violent acts. While acknowledging mostly peaceful demonstrations, law enforcement has received reports of threats of violence towards neighbors and businesses supporting the cull.
The arrested suspect, associated with the protest camp, was apprehended without resistance and released with conditions prohibiting return to the property or contact with the victim.
Pasitney condemned the reported assault and arson, disavowing any violence associated with the farm. She expressed solidarity with the affected neighbor and praised police actions in addressing the incident promptly.
Amid escalating tensions, the CFIA has assumed control of the farm pending a court decision on the cull. Online rhetoric and on-site confrontations have intensified, with allegations against the CFIA regarding ostrich care practices.
The CFIA refuted claims of mistreatment, asserting proper care for the ostriches under their supervision. They highlighted pre-existing conditions in some birds and assured ongoing care and monitoring, including collaboration with the farm’s regular suppliers for feed.
The ongoing investigation is focused on incidents of arson, threats, and animal harm, reflecting the complex and contentious situation surrounding Universal Ostrich Farms and the efforts to prevent the culling of the ostriches.
