Must read

Coco Gauff secured victory in the Wuhan Open by claiming a 6-4, 7-5 win over Jessica Pegula in an all-American final. Gauff, 21 years old, clinched her second title of the year, adding to her 11 career titles, including the French Open on clay.

In a tense moment during the match, with Gauff trailing 3-5 in the second set, she managed to hold her serve before breaking Pegula’s serve to level the score at 5-5. Gauff seized the opportunity on a match point when Pegula’s forehand volley missed the mark, ending the match with a forehand winner.

Reflecting on her performance, Gauff expressed pride in her straight-set victories throughout the tournament, emphasizing her satisfaction with her achievements regardless of the final outcome.

Pegula, aged 31, had previously overcome top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals but fell short in the final, missing out on her 10th career title. Gauff’s triumph marked the second time an American player has claimed the Wuhan title since Venus Williams in 2015.

The final between Gauff and Pegula marked their seventh career encounter and their first meeting in a final match. Pegula holds a 4-3 record against Gauff overall, having also partnered with her for success in WTA doubles competitions.

During the trophy ceremony, Gauff expressed gratitude towards Pegula for the support and camaraderie they shared on tour and looked forward to more competitive matches in the future. Gauff’s final record now stands at 11-3, while Pegula’s record in finals dropped to 9-11.

Pegula reciprocated the respect, acknowledging Gauff’s maturity and talent despite her younger age. The mutual admiration between the two players was evident as they reflected on their competitive yet respectful relationship on and off the court.
