“Canadian Educators Embrace AI in Higher Education”

Must read

In light of the prevalent use of generative AI tools by Canadian students, educators are increasingly incorporating artificial intelligence into higher education settings. They are establishing guidelines to ensure responsible and critical utilization of AI among students. This shift is prompting a reevaluation of teaching methods and assessment strategies as institutions typically leave AI-related decisions to individual faculty members.

University professors are integrating AI into their courses and guiding students on how to effectively leverage these tools for learning. Antonello Callimaci, an accounting professor at Université du Québec à Montréal, has developed an AI teaching assistant named Bobby. Bobby provides students with prompt responses derived from Callimaci’s course materials and directs them back to the professor for further clarification.

Political science professor Joseph Wong from the University of Toronto has revamped his teaching approach by incorporating generative AI tools to engage students in meaningful discussions. Instead of traditional reaction papers, students now engage in “reaction dialogues” with AI after completing weekly readings.

At the University of Lethbridge, assistant professor Sidney Shapiro utilizes AI and machine learning to create interactive and engaging lessons for students. By leveraging AI tools, Shapiro encourages students to think creatively and critically while learning foundational skills.

Concordia University instructor Maggie McDonnell integrates AI into her courses, prompting students to explore the implications of AI in various industries and collaborate on establishing an AI policy for their assignments. McDonnell emphasizes the importance of teaching students to use AI responsibly and ethically.

Educators are adapting their assessment methods and learning objectives to accommodate the integration of AI technologies in education. The evolving landscape challenges instructors to continuously innovate and find effective ways to engage students while ensuring a focus on learning outcomes.
