Must read

Montreal’s tennis star, Felix Auger-Aliassime, clinched another victory by winning the European Open in Belgium over the weekend. The 25-year-old Canadian defeated Jiri Lehecka from the Czech Republic in a thrilling match, claiming the ATP 250 tournament title on the hard courts in Brussels.

Auger-Aliassime, seeded second in the competition, showcased an impressive performance, serving 17 aces during the intense two-hour and 34-minute match. He dominated the court by winning 79% of his first-serve points and maintained control even after losing the second set. Throughout the match, he capitalized on two out of six break-point opportunities while denying Lehecka any chances to break his serve.

Reflecting on his victory, Auger-Aliassime expressed his satisfaction with the high level of play displayed by both players during the final match. He emphasized the intensity and focus required to secure the win, stating, “It’s the final, so we put everything on the line. I feel like we were both extremely focused from the beginning. It was a high level for two sets, then you don’t know how things can go. But I’m obviously glad.”

This triumph marks Auger-Aliassime’s eighth career title and his third title of the year, adding to his earlier wins in Montpellier, France, and Adelaide, Australia, at the beginning of 2025. With this victory, he now shares the record for the most singles titles among Canadian male players in the Open era, tying with Milos Raonic.

Auger-Aliassime, currently ranked 13th in the world, has shown consistent success in his career, despite dropping from his previous ranking of 6th in November 2022.
