Must read

Canadian runner Nate Tucker secured a historic victory at the Para athletics world championships in New Delhi by clinching his signature event in record-breaking fashion. Tucker, hailing from Victoria, outdid himself by setting a new championship record in the men’s 1,500-meter T38 final with a remarkable time of three minutes and 57.98 seconds. This triumph marked his third world title in this particular event.

During the race, Tucker strategically positioned himself near the front before making a decisive move on the final lap to claim the lead. The 2021 Paralympic champion managed to slash 3.9 seconds off his previous record, which he had set six years ago at his inaugural world championships in Dubai.

Following Tucker’s outstanding performance, Tunisia’s Amen Allah Tissaoui secured the silver medal with a time of 3:58.17, narrowly edging out Australia’s Angus Hincksman, who finished with a time of 3:58.19.

Expressing his gratitude, Tucker emphasized the collective effort of his team, particularly praising his coach, Heather Hennigar, for her invaluable support. The 30-year-old athlete, formerly known as Nate Riech, had previously clinched the 1,500-meter world title in 2023 in Paris, followed by a silver medal at the Paris Paralympics in 2024.

In addition to Tucker’s remarkable achievement, fellow Canadians Liam Stanley, Marissa Papaconstantinou, and Austin Smeenk also made their mark on the final day of competition. Papaconstantinou, a sprinter from Toronto, secured her first world silver medal in the women’s 200 T64 final, finishing with a time of 27.07 seconds, just behind Marlene van Gansewinkel of the Netherlands. Smeenk, a wheelchair racer from Oakville, Ontario, claimed bronze in the men’s 800 T34 event with a time of 1:40.50, adding to his previous bronze win in the men’s 400 T34 final.

Canada wrapped up the championships with a total of nine medals, including three gold, one silver, and five bronze, showcasing the country’s strength and talent in the Para athletics world.
