The Toronto Blue Jays displayed another strong performance with a potent offense and reliable pitching to clinch a crucial 8-2 victory against the Seattle Mariners in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) on Thursday evening, leveling the series at two wins each.
The Mariners initially took the lead with a solo home run by Josh Naylor from Canada in the second inning. However, Toronto quickly responded by scoring three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth, establishing a 5-1 lead by the midway point of the game.
Andrés Giménez of the Blue Jays hit a two-run home run for the second consecutive night in the third inning, setting the tone for the team’s offensive prowess. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. contributed with a solo home run in the seventh inning, followed by two additional runs scored by Toronto in the eighth inning.
Pitcher Max Scherzer, making his playoff debut with the Blue Jays at 41 years old, delivered a solid performance despite conceding an early home run. Scherzer struck out five Mariners over five innings, earning praise from Blue Jays manager John Schneider for his resilience and effectiveness throughout the game.
Toronto’s trio of relievers, including Louis Varland, Jeff Hoffman, and Seranthony Domínguez, closed out the game without allowing Seattle to score further runs. Addison Barger, typically a third baseman, showcased strong defensive plays after being shifted to right field for the game.
With this victory, the Blue Jays have evened the series against the Mariners, who secured wins in the first two ALCS games in Toronto. The upcoming Game 5 will take place at T-Mobile Park in Seattle before shifting back to Toronto for Game 6 at Rogers Centre.
The winner of the ALCS will advance to the World Series, facing the victor of the National League Championship Series between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Toronto is aiming to secure its first World Series appearance in over 30 years, while Seattle seeks its first-ever shot at the Fall Classic. The next game is scheduled for Friday evening, with Toronto sending Kevin Gausman to the mound against Seattle’s Bryce Miller.
