Canada showed improvement in their performance but fell short against the United States in the final game of their women’s hockey Rivalry Series. The U.S. emerged victorious with a 4-1 win in Edmonton, completing a clean sweep over four games and outscoring the Canadians 24-7 overall.
Despite a stronger effort and better cohesion compared to their previous 10-4 loss, the Canadian women succumbed to their rivals ahead of the upcoming Olympic Games in February. Canadian captain Marie-Philip Poulin acknowledged the need for continued hard work, stating, “Nothing awesome comes easy. We know there’s work to be done. I don’t think we can take those four games and get down on ourselves.”
U.S. captain Hilary Knight, who plans to retire from international hockey after her fifth Olympics, scored two goals, including an empty-netter, in front of a crowd of 7,722 at Rogers Place. Defenders Laila Edwards and Caroline Harvey contributed to the U.S. goals, with goaltender Aerin Frankel making critical saves. Taylor Heise led the series in assists with a total of eight.
Brianne Jenner netted Canada’s lone goal, while Ann-Renée Desbiens made 28 saves in goal. Despite trailing 2-1 in the third period, Canada couldn’t stage a comeback as Knight sealed the win for the U.S. with another goal.
Canada’s players highlighted the importance of improving offensive play and reducing penalties. The team aims to regroup and prepare for the upcoming Olympic tournament in Milan, Italy. The Canadians praised their stronger physicality and disciplined penalty kill in the final game against the U.S.
As preparations continue, Canada is expected to announce its 23-player Olympic roster in January. The team plans to regather for a mini-camp in Europe after players return to their respective PWHL clubs or college teams.
In the game, Canada outshot the U.S. in the first period but struggled in the second. Despite moments of parity, the U.S. capitalized on key opportunities to secure their victory. Both teams displayed competitive spirit and determination as they prepare for the pinnacle of international women’s hockey competition in February.
