“U.S.-Mediated Talks on Ukraine Conflict End Without Breakthrough”

Must read

The most recent U.S.-mediated discussions between representatives from Moscow and Kyiv regarding Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine concluded on Wednesday without any indication of a breakthrough. Both parties described the talks as “challenging” as the conflict’s fourth anniversary looms next week.

These negotiations in Switzerland mark the third round of direct discussions facilitated by the U.S., following previous meetings earlier this year in Abu Dhabi, which were characterized as productive but did not yield significant progress. Anticipations for substantial advancements in Geneva were modest.

Following the conclusion of the talks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the complexity of the negotiations and conversed briefly with his negotiating team via phone from Kyiv. Zelenskyy accused Russia of prolonging the negotiations while continuing its invasion, a claim echoed by him and European leaders in the past.

Despite the challenges, some headway was achieved on military matters, although significant political disparities persist, particularly concerning the fate of the territory in eastern Ukraine currently held by the Russian military and desired to be retained by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Zelenskyy disclosed.

Zelenskyy characterized the military deliberations as “productive,” stating that the armed forces of both nations discussed potential mechanisms for monitoring any future ceasefire. He mentioned that the monitoring process would involve the participation of the U.S.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s representative, Steve Witkoff, asserted on social media that the U.S.’s efforts for peace in Ukraine over the past year have led to meaningful advancements. The conflict continues with both armies engaged along the approximately 1,250-kilometer front line, while Russia persists in targeting civilian areas in Ukraine on a daily basis.

After the first day’s discussions in Geneva, Russian drones reportedly carried out an attack in the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, resulting in casualties. Subsequently, overnight, Ukraine reported that Russia launched a ballistic missile and 126 long-range drones towards its territory.

European diplomats and Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of Europe’s involvement in the peace process, emphasizing their security interests in Ukraine amid Putin’s broader objectives. The disparity between Russia and Ukraine’s settlement demands remains evident.

Zelenskyy proposed a ceasefire and a direct meeting with Putin, whereas Moscow insists on a comprehensive agreement before considering a truce. Putin’s primary objectives, declared during the invasion in 2022, include Ukraine renouncing NATO membership, reducing its military size, and safeguarding Russian language and culture to maintain ties with Moscow.

Furthermore, Putin seeks Kyiv to withdraw its forces from the regions under Russian occupation. Russia currently controls a significant portion of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine, which Ukraine adamantly refuses to accept as part of Russia.
