“Crystal Meth Descent: Businessman Gets 8 Years for Deadly Crimes”

Must read

Mihail Oblacov’s attorney revealed that his life took a sharp downturn upon being introduced to crystal meth, leading to a series of crimes resulting in the death of a stranger. Oblacov, aged 40, was handed an eight-year prison term by Regina provincial court for offenses committed in 2024, with the most severe being impaired driving causing the death of 64-year-old Robert McCallum.

Additionally, Oblacov pleaded guilty to various charges, including assaulting his wife, leaving the scenes of multiple accidents, attempting to steal vehicles, and assaulting a police officer. His lawyer, Logan Marchand, detailed Oblacov’s descent into addiction following his successful business ventures, triggered by his introduction to cocaine in 2023.

The consequences of crystal meth use, including addiction and psychosis, severely impacted Oblacov’s life and relationships, as mentioned by Marchand during the sentencing hearing. Crown prosecutor Derek Davidson outlined the sequence of events starting from Oblacov’s drug-induced actions in February 2024 to the violent incidents in July 2024, culminating in the tragic death of Robert McCallum.

The July events involved Oblacov assaulting his wife, fleeing from the scene, causing a fatal collision, attempting car thefts, and assaulting an employee and a police officer. The Crown described the events as “particularly horrific,” advocating for a stringent sentence. Despite pleas from Oblacov’s lawyer for leniency due to his mental state, the court sentenced him to eight years in prison, with a driving ban upon release.

During the court proceedings, Oblacov and his wife expressed remorse for the impact of his actions, with Oblacov acknowledging the irreversible harm caused. Following his time served on remand, Oblacov has approximately five and a half years remaining on his sentence.
