Just a week and a half after the introduction of a new domestic violence unit in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, a tragic incident unfolded in Shreveport, where a father fatally shot eight children, including seven of his own, and wounded two women. This devastating event, characterized as the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in over two years, was disclosed by officials during a press briefing on Monday.
Expressing profound sorrow, Caddo Parish Sheriff Henry Whitehorn remarked, “I don’t think any one of us could have anticipated the heart-wrenching tragedies that have unfolded in our community within such a short span of time.” He emphasized the impact of domestic violence, emphasizing the loss of eight innocent children.
The press conference was marked by a compassionate tone, with city officials and local law enforcement calling for community support for the grieving family. One official highlighted the immense pain faced by three mothers and a father left mourning the loss of a child, urging the public to take domestic violence seriously to prevent such devastating outcomes.
The victims, three boys and five girls aged between three and 11, were identified as Jayla Elkins, Shayla Elkins, Braylon Snow, Khedarrion Snow, Kayla Pugh, Layla Pugh, Markaydon Pugh, and Sariahh Snow. Sheriff Whitehorn expressed that no words could fully convey the depth of this tragedy.
The perpetrator, identified as 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, used what was described as an “assault-style weapon” to carry out the shootings at two residences in Shreveport early on Sunday. He fatally shot the children and wounded two women, including his wife Shaneiqua Elkins and another woman believed to be the mother of three of his children. Both women remain hospitalized in critical condition.
Shaneiqua’s sister, who alerted authorities during the incident, managed to escape with a child by jumping from the roof as the violence unfolded. The suspect was later pursued by law enforcement and died following an encounter where officers discharged their weapons. The circumstances of his death, whether by police gunfire or self-inflicted injury, remain unclear, according to Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith.
Although there were no prior reports of domestic violence involving Shamar Elkins, he had previously been on probation for a weapons offense in 2019, which barred him from possessing a firearm for a specified period after completing his sentence. Reports indicated that the Elkins couple was in the process of separating and had a court appearance scheduled for the day of the tragedy, following an argument related to their separation.
Family members described Shaneiqua as a devoted mother who cherished her children’s achievements and took great care in preparing them for family gatherings. Tributes have been left by community members outside the residence where the children were killed, forming a touching makeshift memorial adorned with balloons and stuffed animals.
