Grant Avenue Studio Celebrates 50 Years in Music

Must read

Grant Avenue Studio in Hamilton, a renowned recording studio where music legends such as Gordon Lightfoot and Johnny Cash have created music, is set to commemorate 50 years in the music industry. Established in 1976 by Canadian record producer Daniel Lanois, his brother Bob Lanois, and Bob Doidge, the studio is situated in a converted Edwardian-style residence built in 1918 on Grant Ave. near Main St. E. Throughout its existence, Grant Avenue Studio has attracted top musical talents from both Canada and around the globe.

In 2023, Mike Bruce, along with Debbie Bruce and Marco Montano, took over ownership of the business. According to Bruce, the studio is like a living museum with a rich history spanning half a century, exuding a unique charm that resonates with anyone who steps inside.

The studio, being a historical landmark in the music scene, has hosted iconic artists like Gordon Lightfoot, Johnny Cash, and Brian Eno, further adding to its illustrious reputation. Jamie Tennant, a local music enthusiast and program director at CFMU, describes Grant Avenue Studio as a hub of creativity that has evolved over the years, garnering a reputation that transcends time.

Despite minimal updates since its inception in the 1970s and ’80s, Grant Avenue Studio retains its original character, including unique features like window wells filled with sand for soundproofing. Bruce highlights the diverse range of talents that have graced the studio, from opera singers to indie artists, showcasing the studio’s versatility and appeal to musicians across different genres.

‘Hotbed of talent’ showcased in YouTube series

Bruce emphasizes the abundance of talent in Hamilton and plans to celebrate the studio’s 50th anniversary by continuing the Grant Avenue Studio Presents initiative, featuring intimate YouTube concerts with local artists. Tennant recalls the studio’s welcoming ambiance, akin to a comfortable living room filled with musical instruments and equipment.

Studio’s vintage console and musical legacy

Noteworthy among the studio’s equipment is the vintage MCI JH-500C control console, a piece of music history that has been used to produce iconic albums such as Hotel California by The Eagles and ACDC’s Back in Black. Tennant highlights the allure of using such historic soundboards for artists, attributing it to the unique sounds they can produce.

With its blend of history, energy, and cutting-edge technology, Grant Avenue Studio continues to attract artists seeking a distinctive recording experience. As the studio approaches its 50th year milestone, plans for special events including an anniversary party, museum exhibition, and the Road to Supercrawl contest are underway to celebrate this significant achievement.
