“Poaching Probe: Waterfowl Killed at Point Pelee”

Must read

Parks Canada is currently conducting an investigation into a suspected poaching incident involving waterfowl at Point Pelee National Park. The incident is believed to have occurred between 8 p.m. on April 23 and 8 a.m. on April 24 in the marsh area of the park. Authorities are seeking information from individuals who may have witnessed the illegal discharge of a firearm or noticed any suspicious individuals or vehicles in the vicinity during that time frame.

Describing poaching as a severe violation under the Canada National Parks Act, the government agency emphasized the importance of reporting any relevant details to aid in their investigation. Officials are particularly interested in obtaining dashcam footage from various locations within the park, including the entrance, marsh boardwalk, or Blue Heron day use areas.

Following the discovery of a deceased swan by a park visitor who promptly alerted authorities, Debra Parker, a frequent visitor to Point Pelee, expressed her distress over the situation. She identified the victim as a nesting female swan based on photographic evidence provided by a friend. Melissa Hargreaves, another visitor who had photographed the swan a day prior to the incident, described the swan’s peaceful behavior while attending to her nest.

Expressing sadness and dismay over the poaching, Hargreaves hoped for the swift apprehension and appropriate punishment of the perpetrator. Similarly, Wallaceburg resident Larry Strung, who had captured images of the swans near the boardwalk, shared his astonishment at the proximity of the nests to human activity and lamented the harm caused to the graceful creatures.

The community at Point Pelee National Park remains deeply affected by the incident, with residents and visitors expressing concern and sorrow over the loss of wildlife due to poaching activities in the protected area.
