Labrador father-son team donates race winnings

Must read

A father-son team from central Labrador, Randy and Sebastian Malleck of Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation, recently contributed a portion of their winnings from the demanding 3,400-kilometre snowmobile race, Cain’s Quest, to a children’s hospital. The Mallecks, victorious in February and awarded $100,000, generously donated around $10,000 to the IWK Health Centre in Halifax. Randy Malleck emphasized that their focus is on the trophy rather than the money, stating that it was an easy decision to give back. The donation is intended to support children in need.

Team 99, as the father and son are known, also emerged victorious in the 2024 Cain’s Quest and chose to support the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. John’s that year. The decision to donate to the IWK was personal for the Mallecks, as Randy’s daughter and granddaughter were born there.

During an interview with Labrador Morning at Saga Enterprises in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, where the team is sponsored, Randy Malleck and his son discussed the donation. Saga Enterprises’ general manager, Sheryl Colbourne, conveyed that she delivered the contribution to the IWK during a recent trip to Halifax with company owner Dorman Anderson, describing the experience as heartwarming and noting the rare nature of such donations to the hospital.

Candace Anderson from Saga Enterprises expressed admiration for the team’s success and teamwork, highlighting the strong communication between Randy and Sebastian. She emphasized the company’s pride in being associated with Team 99 and their commitment to giving back.

The Mallecks’ actions have resonated positively, emphasizing their dedication to supporting children’s health.
