“US to Withdraw 5,000 Troops from Germany Amid Iran Conflict”

Must read

The Pentagon announced on Friday that the United States will be withdrawing 5,000 troops stationed in Germany, a NATO ally, amid escalating tensions over the Iran conflict between President Donald Trump and European leaders.

The decision to reduce the troop presence comes after President Trump clashed with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over remarks made by Merz regarding the Iran war. A senior Pentagon official criticized Germany’s recent rhetoric as “inappropriate and unhelpful,” prompting the withdrawal of troops.

The withdrawal of troops is expected to be completed over the next six to 12 months, bringing U.S. troop levels in Europe back to pre-2022 levels. This move is in line with the Trump administration’s strategy to shift security responsibilities to Europe while responding to what it perceives as disloyalty from allies.

The U.S. has also considered potential repercussions for NATO allies that did not fully support U.S. operations in the Iran conflict. Trump hinted at the possibility of further troop withdrawals from Italy and Spain, with Spain facing the threat of a U.S. trade embargo due to its reluctance to support U.S. military actions against Iran.

In addition to Germany, Trump’s strained relationships with other European leaders, such as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, have further fueled tensions. The U.S. president has criticized NATO allies for their lack of naval support in opening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil shipments that has been disrupted during the Iran conflict.

While Germany has supported U.S. operations in various ways, including providing bases and permissions for military activities, the decision to reduce troops risks deepening the divide between the U.S. and Europe. European leaders are expected to increase defense spending to compensate for what they see as a diminishing trust in Washington’s reliability.

As part of the troop withdrawal, a brigade combat team currently in Germany will be relocated, and a long-range fires battalion planned for deployment later this year will no longer be sent, according to the official statement.
