“Leading AI Company Temporarily Deactivates Advanced Creations Amid Gov’t Directive”

Must read

Anthropic, a leading AI company, announced on Friday that it has temporarily deactivated its newest artificial intelligence creations, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, in response to a directive from the Trump administration aiming to prevent their utilization by foreign entities.

This move by the U.S. government signifies a significant measure to limit access to cutting-edge AI models. While Anthropic recently made Fable available to the public, this model is a scaled-down version of the more advanced Mythos, which the company restricts access to due to concerns about cybersecurity.

In a released statement, Anthropic expressed its disagreement with the government’s approach, citing that the directive lacked clarity on national security apprehensions. The company stressed the importance of a transparent and fair process based on technical facts to block potentially unsafe AI deployments.

Anthropic labeled the situation as a “misunderstanding” and expressed aspirations to reinstate access to the models promptly. The Commerce Department did not provide an immediate comment on the matter.

The directive comes following President Trump’s recent executive order, which establishes a system for the federal government to assess national security risks associated with advanced AI systems before their public release. Participation in this evaluation process by AI developers is voluntary.

During the introduction of Mythos in April, Anthropic highlighted the model’s capability to detect software vulnerabilities on a large scale, emphasizing the potential risks to economies, public safety, and national security if misused.

Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem discussed the model during the International Monetary Fund’s spring meetings, stressing the need for proactive measures by firms, regulators, and policymakers to address the challenges posed by rapidly evolving AI technologies. Macklem emphasized the critical importance of robust cybersecurity measures in light of the vulnerabilities inherent in emerging technologies like Mythos.

Ultimately, whether it is Mythos or any other AI model, the evolving landscape of AI necessitates a proactive approach to cybersecurity to safeguard against potential threats and exploitation of vulnerabilities.
