The European Union’s Ambassador to Canada, Geneviève Tuts, expressed the EU’s intention to enhance its relationship with Canada and bring it to a higher level. Tuts, in an interview with the CBC’s Power & Politics, mentioned that while full membership was not on the table, both Canada and the EU should explore avenues for a more robust partnership beyond their current arrangement.
Recent surveys indicate a growing interest in Canada joining the EU among European nations. Although the idea has been suggested by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Tuts highlighted that Canada’s geographical location poses challenges for traditional EU membership. Nonetheless, she emphasized the importance of seeking alternative forms of collaboration.
Prime Minister Mark Carney, who recently attended a summit of European leaders in Armenia, emphasized the need for Europe to address the weakening international rules-based order. Tuts commended Carney’s vision and highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen the relationship between Canada and the EU based on shared principles.
Despite no formal discussions on Canada’s EU accession, efforts to deepen transatlantic relations persist. A strategic partnership between Canada and the EU was established last year to enhance cooperation in various sectors, including trade, technology, energy, and security. Tuts expressed optimism for progress on the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement in the near future.
