Vancouver often serves as the starting point for renowned musicians embarking on major concert tours. For Diljit Dosanjh, kicking off his Aura World Tour at B.C. Place on Thursday, the significance of the city goes beyond just convenience.
In a recent social media post promoting the concert, Dosanjh highlighted that B.C. Place is located near where the Komagata Maru anchored in Vancouver Harbour in 1914. The ship carried 376 migrant passengers, mostly Sikh individuals from Punjab, who were denied permission to disembark. They endured harsh conditions onboard for two months before being forced to return.
Dosanjh, recalling the historical event, mentioned in the post, “Our people weren’t allowed to dock here… And today 55,000 of us will gather there.” This isn’t Dosanjh’s first performance at B.C. Place, having previously played to a sold-out crowd in 2024. Apart from his musical success, Dosanjh has also engaged in film projects in the Vancouver area and established significant partnerships, especially resonating with the large Punjabi community in B.C.
With a massive Instagram following of 26.6 million, Dosanjh holds considerable sway on social media. His efforts in showcasing Punjabi music and culture prominently, alongside the glitz and glamour associated with it, contribute to his widespread appeal. Music journalist Jeevan Sangha noted the enthusiastic reception of Dosanjh’s work in the community, emphasizing the strong support and admiration he receives.
Following his Vancouver performance, Dosanjh’s tour will continue to Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg before heading to the United States. The tour will circle back to Canada for a show in Toronto on May 31, concluding with appearances in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
