“B.C. Officials Warn of Black Bear Danger in Cumberland”

Must read

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) and the Village of Cumberland are urging residents to exercise increased caution following an incident where an individual was harmed by a black bear on Sunday. The BCCOS confirmed that two hikers, accompanied by an unleashed dog, were attacked by a family of black bears near the Bevan Wetlands. One of the hikers sustained injuries, was hospitalized, and has since been discharged. The BCCOS noted that the attack was defensive in nature but opted not to search for the bear, choosing instead to monitor the area.

The Village of Cumberland has taken to social media to advise visitors to remain vigilant and watch for bear indicators such as fresh droppings and footprints. Hikers are encouraged to travel in groups, leash their dogs, carry bear spray, and make noise while traversing through natural settings. Any instances of aggressive bear behavior or encounters between humans and wildlife can be reported to the Conservation Officer Service’s 24-hour RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277.
