The men’s national soccer team of Canada competed in Montreal for the first time since 2017, but the anticipated return home turned sour with a 1-0 defeat to Australia at Stade Saputo on Friday night.
Australia’s unbeaten streak extended to 12 games with Nestory Irankunda’s winning goal, having suffered only one loss since March 21, 2024.
Mathieu Choiniere, a Montreal native playing in his hometown for the first time with the national team, expressed regret over a slight error but highlighted the learning opportunity from the match. Despite feeling they were the superior side and creating numerous scoring chances, Canada fell short and vowed to bounce back.
The game saw early controversy as a penalty claim for Canada was dismissed by the referee. Australia then adopted a defensive 5-4-1 setup, frustrating Canada’s attacking efforts while maintaining solid defensive shape.
Canadian head coach Jesse Marsch praised his team’s efforts and strategic play, acknowledging the need for sharper execution in the final third. Despite creating promising opportunities, Canada struggled to break through Australia’s defense.
Australia had a clear chance to score around the hour mark, but Alessandro Circati’s shot went over the bar. The game intensified in the final 30 minutes as both teams sought a breakthrough, with Australia’s substitutions providing a fresh impetus.
Australia capitalized in the 71st minute through a surprise goal by Irankunda, exploiting a defensive error by Canada. The visitors then focused on disrupting Canada’s rhythm, leading to heated exchanges on the pitch.
Despite late attempts by Canada to equalize, including a close opportunity for Jacob Shaffelburg, they failed to find the back of the net. The match ended 1-0 in favor of Australia.
Looking ahead, Canada will face Colombia in New Jersey on Oct. 14, while Australia will take on the United States in Colorado on the same day.
