Banff National Park’s superintendent instructed Parks Canada wildlife employees to relocate a black bear near a popular ski resort due to safety concerns, despite objections. In an email dated October 29, 2025, Sal Rasheed emphasized the risk posed to trail users, prompting the relocation of the black bear near Goat’s Eye gondola station at Sunshine Village Ski Resort.
Although wildlife staff proposed alternative measures to safeguard both the bear and the public, Rasheed insisted on moving the bear to avert potential dangers. The staff recommended immediate closure of the den vicinity to people and suggested limiting vehicle speeds, with a long-term plan to relocate the access road away from the den.
The decision to move the bear sparked controversy among wildlife experts, with concerns raised over the impact on the bear’s welfare and the park’s ecological integrity. Despite reservations from wildlife staff, Parks Canada proceeded with the relocation on October 31, with Sunshine Village staff securing the den area with boulders.
Subsequent actions included a closure of the west side of Eagle Mountain on December 5, following the bear’s relocation. While some experts supported the move, others advocated for area closures to mitigate risks associated with human activity. The debate highlighted the delicate balance between wildlife conservation and public safety in high-traffic park areas.
