Disney+ in Canada is implementing a price hike for its streaming packages, effective November. The monthly cost for the commercial-free subscriptions is set to increase by up to $3. The standard high-definition plan will see a $3 rise to $15.99 per month, while the premium 4K package will go up by $1 to $16.99 monthly. The ad-supported standard subscription will remain at $8.99 a month.
Similar price adjustments are being introduced by Disney+ in various regions, including the United States and the United Kingdom. This move aligns with the trend of streaming companies promoting ad-supported options, which offer lower costs for subscribers while generating additional revenue from advertisements.
The last price increase for Canadian Disney+ subscriptions occurred about two years ago, but other streaming platforms, such as Netflix and Apple TV Plus, have raised their prices this year. Another significant change at Disney+ this week involves retiring the Star branding and transitioning to Hulu in all international markets, including Canada. Disney assures that this rebranding will not impact its content selection but aims to bring Disney+ Canada more in line with the U.S. and global markets.
Disney+ faced a public backlash last month when some consumers canceled their subscriptions following controversy surrounding Disney’s handling of the Jimmy Kimmel situation. In September, ABC, a Disney-owned network, suspended Kimmel for remarks he made about conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination, sparking debates about freedom of speech.
