“Eurovision Considers Canada Participation”

Must read

Eurovision Director, Martin Green, disclosed to the BBC on Wednesday that Canada has the opportunity to partake in the renowned song competition, although there has been no formal request or decision made yet. Addressing the speculation surrounding Prime Minister Mark Carney’s interest in Canada’s involvement in Eurovision, Green acknowledged the rumors.

Green mentioned, “We are aware of Mark Carney’s desire to embrace Europe. While nothing definitive has crossed my desk, I can affirm that we maintain an open stance. Our doors have been welcoming for 70 years, and we extend an invitation to anyone willing to embrace the values of this magnificent event and grace our stage alongside friends.”

The Eurovision Song Contest, known for countries performing original songs, is overseen by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). While traditionally, full participation is reserved for EBU full members, in recent years, the contest has allowed a few non-European or associate-member participants, notably Australia.

CBC/Radio-Canada is an associate member of the EBU since 1950. Leon Mar, the broadcaster’s senior director of public affairs, clarified that associate membership does not grant eligibility to compete in Eurovision. He highlighted, “Participation in the Eurovision Song Contest is exclusive to public broadcasters who are full EBU members.”

Mar affirmed that CBC/Radio-Canada is engaging with the EBU and participating in the contest through observation. He also emphasized the broadcaster’s editorial independence and its collaboration with the EBU for content exchange.

The possibility of Canada joining Eurovision surfaced in last year’s federal budget, with the government exploring potential participation with CBC/Radio-Canada. While discussions continue, no formal application or timeline has been announced, indicating that any future involvement would require EBU approval and a formal proposal.

As the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 progresses, with the second round of semi-finals on Thursday and the final on Saturday, the door remains ajar for Canada’s prospective engagement, pending official processes and agreements.
