Must read

A father and son duo from Saskatoon embarked on a road trip spanning over 2,000 kilometers to witness the Toronto Blue Jays facing off against the Seattle Mariners in the American League Championship Series (ALCS) on Sunday night. This marked the Blue Jays’ first appearance in the ALCS since 2016 when they were defeated by the Cleveland Guardians with a 4-1 score.

Rhett Sangster, a devoted baseball enthusiast, and his son Kai made a spontaneous decision to purchase tickets for the game last Thursday. Sangster, expressing their avid support for the Blue Jays, mentioned that playoff opportunities for the team are rare, making this game a must-see for them.

The idea of a “coming of age” journey for his son prompted Sangster and his wife to seize the chance to attend the game. Setting out after lunch on Thursday, the pair embarked on a 33-hour drive to Toronto in their van, opting for a road trip experience filled with quality father-son bonding time. Their journey included overnight stays with family in Winnipeg and camping near Thunder Bay and Sault St. Marie before reaching Toronto on Sunday night for the game.

The duo’s resourcefulness was evident as they converted the van’s back seats into a makeshift sleeping area for Kai, utilizing a mattress to save on expenses along the way. The excitement peaked as Game 1 of the ALCS commenced on Sunday night, with Blue Jays’ George Springer igniting the game with a solo home run in the first inning, securing an early lead for the team.

Despite the thrilling start, the Blue Jays ultimately succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against the Seattle Mariners. Kai shared his experience of witnessing the game live at Toronto’s Roger’s Centre, highlighting the electrifying atmosphere that intensified following Springer’s standout performance.

Reflecting on the trip, Sangster emphasized the significance of cherishing time spent together, underscoring the value of building lasting memories and strong relationships with loved ones. The series against the Seattle Mariners will continue with Game 2 at the Rogers Centre on Monday night before transitioning to Seattle for Game 3 on Wednesday.
