“Former Marine’s Church Attack Kills Four in Michigan”

Must read

Investigators are focusing on determining the motive behind a former Marine’s actions, as he rammed a pickup truck into a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Michigan, opening fire during a crowded service and causing the death of at least four individuals while setting the building on fire. Crews are searching for victims in the burnt rubble following the attack that wounded eight others in Grand Blanc Township, located about 96 kilometers north of Detroit. The FBI has classified the incident, the second attack on a U.S. church in just over a month, as an “act of targeted violence.”

The shooter, identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, from the neighboring town of Burton, is under investigation. Authorities have not disclosed any details about Sanford’s potential connection to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The White House press secretary mentioned that investigators are examining the level of planning involved in the attack to uncover any possible motives left behind.

The attacker used gas to ignite the fire and possessed explosive devices, although it remains uncertain if they were utilized. Two bodies have been discovered in the wreckage, with potential for more victims as the search continues. Sanford, a former U.S. Marine deployed to Iraq once, served for four years and was discharged in 2008 with the rank of sergeant.

President Donald Trump called for prayers for the victims and their families, condemning the violence. The shooting incident occurred a day after the passing of Russell M. Nelson, the oldest president of the Utah-based faith, at 101 years old. The impact of the shooting has deeply affected the local community, prompting prayer services and expressions of shock and grief. Grand Blanc Community Schools were closed to allow families time to process and mourn the tragedy alongside their children.
