Indigenous Cabinet Ministers Undeterred by Attacks

Must read

Recent fires and incidents of vandalism are not deterring cabinet ministers Nahanni Fontaine and Bernadette Smith from their political roles, Fontaine stated. She emphasized that their personal safety, as well as that of her colleague, the first two Indigenous women cabinet ministers in Manitoba, is a top priority following multiple fires and acts of vandalism at their campaign offices.

Fontaine expressed determination, stating, “We worked hard to be here. We continue to work hard for our responsibilities, for our departments, for our communities, for our relatives, and no amount of attacks will ever, ever push us out of this.” This commitment was reiterated during an unrelated funding announcement where Fontaine received applause.

The Winnipeg police major crimes unit is currently investigating four fires at Smith’s Point Douglas office from August to September, along with cases of vandalism and a fire at Fontaine’s St. Johns office on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The incidents were brought up for discussion during the first question period of the fall session at the Manitoba Legislature.

Fontaine faced backlash for reposting a social media comment following the assassination of Charlie Kirk, an ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, on September 10. Despite apologizing, Progressive Conservative Leader Obby Khan has called for her removal from cabinet.

Premier Wab Kinew condemned the acts of violence and vandalism, emphasizing that extra safety precautions are being considered. He highlighted the need to address the issue, stating, “A reasonable person, I think, would look at this and conclude that, yeah, there’s an issue going on here in Manitoba right now.”

Fontaine acknowledged the lasting impact of the targeted incidents, describing them as an attack not only on her and Minister Smith but also on the community’s ability to serve constituents in a secure manner. Smith echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the disruption caused by the attacks on their ability to carry out their duties effectively.
