Her son, Shawn Tuffnell, rushed to her aid upon hearing her cries, only to find a hungry and freezing moose near the house, seeking warmth by a dryer vent.
A chaotic struggle ensued as Shawn took bold actions to protect his mother. He initially confronted the moose by punching it in the face, causing a split lip, but the animal persisted in its aggression. Shawn resorted to using a shovel to strike the moose multiple times, yet it continued to attack. The intense situation escalated as the moose attempted to follow Shawn into the house, posing a threat to Angie still outside.
In a desperate bid to safeguard his mother, Shawn engaged in a physical altercation with the moose, grabbing its ears and nostrils to restrain it and prevent further harm. The harrowing ordeal came to an end when Angie’s boyfriend arrived with a rifle, which Shawn used to shoot the moose after multiple attempts, ultimately stopping the animal from causing more harm.
A subsequent examination by the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative confirmed the moose died from gunshot wounds to the head, validating Shawn’s belief that the animal was weak and starving. The report revealed the moose had depleted fat stores and was merely seeking warmth and sustenance.
Despite the traumatic incident, Angie sustained a deep leg wound, while Shawn emerged with minor injuries, including a cracked rib and a head injury. Reflecting on the event, Shawn expressed regret over having to kill the moose but acknowledged that it was a necessary action to ensure their safety.
Moose expert Ryan Brook of the University of Saskatchewan explained that in extreme cold, moose seek thermal cover, which could lead to unexpected encounters with humans.
