On a typical Monday evening at Le Violon, a cozy upscale eatery in Le Plateau, Montreal, an unexpected duo comprising a former prime minister and a renowned pop artist made a grand entrance. Danny Smiles, one of the restaurant’s executive chefs, was taken aback by Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry’s impromptu dinner date in July, which garnered widespread attention globally. Reflecting on the evening, Smiles noted a palpable buzz in the air as patrons couldn’t stop discussing the celebrity guests.
As a former contender on the popular show “Top Chef Canada” and a co-owner of one of the nation’s most esteemed dining establishments, Smiles expressed concerns that despite the delightful nature of the visitors, their visit might overshadow the restaurant’s overall reputation. “It gained a life of its own,” he remarked. “I hope we are not solely remembered as the restaurant where Justin and Katy dined.”
Looking ahead to his upcoming visit to Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Smiles emphasized that the spotlight would be on his culinary skills and those of other talented chefs from Montreal at the 15th annual Devour food and film festival. He highlighted the significance of showcasing Montreal’s culinary scene, emphasizing the close ties with the Maritimes and the frequent sourcing of seafood from Nova Scotia.
Having participated in the festival previously in 2017, Smiles eagerly anticipates returning for the second time, praising Wolfville as a picturesque and welcoming community. At the festival, he will partake in various culinary activities, including leading a workshop and collaborating with four other esteemed Montreal chefs at the grand “degustation” dinner. This culinary extravaganza will feature a tasting menu complemented by wine pairings alongside screenings of food-themed short films, promising an exhilarating gastronomic experience.
The Devour food and film festival is scheduled to run from October 20 to 26, offering attendees a unique culinary and cinematic journey.
