UN Urges Israel: Open Gaza Entry Points for Aid

Must read

The top United Nations humanitarian official is calling on Israel to open all entry points to Gaza to allow a significant increase in aid flow into the region. Tom Fletcher, the UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief, emphasized the urgent need to expedite the delivery of essential supplies, including food and medicine, into Gaza. While some humanitarian aid has started entering Gaza through specific Israeli crossings, Fletcher stressed the necessity of opening additional entry points like Rafah to ensure that all civilians in need receive assistance.

Israel has indicated its readiness to open Rafah for the movement of people but has not yet allowed humanitarian aid to pass through. Despite ongoing tensions and past conflicts, Fletcher remains hopeful for progress, expressing optimism about potential developments regarding the Rafah Crossing in the upcoming days. Samer Abdeljaber, the regional director for the World Food Program in Cairo, echoed the call for more crossings to be operational, emphasizing the importance of facilitating access for aid delivery and ensuring safety for the population in Gaza.

Aid trucks made their way into Gaza recently, but the region continues to face significant challenges, with limited medical care and a large homeless population. Ismail Al-Thawabta, head of the Hamas-run Gaza media office, described the current aid efforts as inadequate compared to the massive needs in the area. The aftermath of Israeli airstrikes has left much of Gaza in ruins, with a high number of casualties reported by Gaza health authorities.

Local groups in Gaza welcome the arrival of aid but stress the need for a more rapid and extensive response to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Save the Children’s humanitarian director in Gaza, Rachael Cummings, highlighted the persistent health issues affecting children, emphasizing the critical role of humanitarian supplies in alleviating their suffering. She emphasized the urgent need to open all land crossings into Gaza to efficiently deliver aid and support the population during the challenging recovery period.

After enduring years of conflict and devastation, the people of Gaza face a long and challenging road to recovery and reconstruction, with essential infrastructure severely damaged. The international community’s continued support and sustained efforts are crucial to rebuilding Gaza and providing essential assistance to those in need.
