The Toronto Blue Jays reached the World Series 32 years ago with the help of St. Catharines, Ontario, and their minor league team, the Baby Jays. Established in 1985 by the Toronto MLB organization, the St. Catharines Blue Jays joined the New York-Penn League a year later, serving as a developmental platform for players aspiring to reach the major leagues.
St. Catharines, primarily recognized for hockey and rowing, was strategically chosen for baseball due to its proximity to Toronto and the suitable Community Park, which met the requirements for the NYPL, a Class A short-season minor league. This league operated as an “up or out” system, where players either progressed to higher levels or exited the baseball scene entirely.
Players like Carlos Delgado began their journey with the St. Catharines Blue Jays before achieving success in the MLB. Delgado fondly recalls his time in St. Catharines as a pivotal period in his career, reminiscing about the opportunities and experiences that shaped his path to becoming a World Series champion with Toronto.
St. Catharines aimed to enhance sports tourism by upgrading Community Park, later renamed George Taylor Field, to attract more baseball enthusiasts. The city aspired to construct a downtown baseball stadium to bolster its image and draw in visitors. The Baby Jays were featured in local advertisements and established a fan club, fostering community engagement and support for the team.
Despite the team’s eventual rebranding as the St. Catharines Stompers in 1995, the legacy of the Baby Jays lives on in the hearts of fans like Jordan Clark. The team’s departure in 1999 marked the end of an era for minor league baseball in St. Catharines, leaving behind cherished memories and a sense of community spirit among baseball enthusiasts.
With dreams of a dedicated stadium unfulfilled, the former Community Park served its purpose but lacked the appeal to sustain the team long-term.
