Olivia and Noah have once again emerged as the most favored names for newborns in Ontario, as per the recently published list by the province on Tuesday. The name Muhammad has made its debut on the list after at least a decade, indicating the increasing multiculturalism in the English-speaking world, according to a baby names expert.
Over the past decade, there hasn’t been much change in the lists, with Olivia maintaining its top spot for 16 years and Noah for six years. Despite this, the editor-in-chief of the world’s largest baby name website cautioned against assuming that classrooms are filled with numerous children named Olivia and Noah. Sophie Kihm from Nameberry pointed out that the popularity of these names has decreased over time as parents now lean towards more unique names.
Kihm highlighted that the names in the top 10 reflect the diverse nature of society in North America and Europe, appealing to people across different cultures and languages. For instance, names like Maya and Mia have gained traction, with Maya being popular among Jewish and Hindu parents, and also associated with the Greek goddess Maya. Parents from diverse backgrounds often seek names that resonate with multiple cultures or languages to help their children integrate into various societies.
On the boys’ side, Liam is a common choice among Latin American and Jewish families due to its positive meaning in Hebrew. This year, Muhammed made a significant entry onto the boys’ list, marking its first appearance in at least a decade. Two individuals named Muhammad from Windsor expressed pride in seeing their name on the list, emphasizing its significance in Islam and representing the Asian continent.
Muhammad Chams, dealer principal at Cruze Auto Sales in Windsor, highlighted the importance of the name in Islam, while software engineer Muhammad Haseeb Ahmad expressed pride in the representation of Muslims and Asians in the top names list. Ahmad extended a message of peace and condolences to the victims of a recent attack in Australia, emphasizing the peaceful values of Islam.
