Chrystia Freeland to Leave Canadian Politics, Join Ukrainian Advisory Team

Must read

Former Liberal cabinet minister Chrystia Freeland has announced her decision to step down as a member of Parliament this Friday, signaling the end of an era for the party. The prominent MP disclosed on Monday that she would be taking on a voluntary advisory role with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and would be departing from Canadian politics in the near future.

In a social media post just two days later, Freeland confirmed her intention to vacate her seat, expressing her dedication to supporting Canada while continuing to champion the cause of the Ukrainian people. As an individual with Ukrainian heritage, Freeland served as deputy prime minister from 2019 to 2024 and was the first female finance minister in Canada. She has been a vocal critic of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Representing the University-Rosedale constituency in downtown Toronto since 2015, Freeland has been at the center of political attention. The Conservatives have called for her immediate resignation, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest given her new advisory role for a foreign government.

Despite criticism from the opposition, Freeland consulted with the federal ethics commissioner and followed his guidance. Originally planning to resign before taking up the advisory position with President Zelenskyy, the announcement was accelerated by the Ukrainian side. Prime Minister Mark Carney had appointed Freeland as Canada’s special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine, a position she will also be relinquishing.

Following her resignation, a by-election will be triggered in the Toronto riding, which is considered a safe seat for the Liberal Party. Freeland’s departure marks a significant transition for the party, as she has been a key figure since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau assumed office in 2015. Known for her role in trade negotiations and economic management, Freeland will be relocating to the United Kingdom to assume the role of CEO at the Rhodes Trust educational charity starting July 1.
