Emmy Award-winning actor Timothy Busfield appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday, following his surrender to authorities to face charges of child sex abuse. He was ordered to be held without bond. The allegations accuse him of inappropriate behavior towards a minor while directing a TV series in New Mexico.
Busfield participated in the court session remotely through a video link from jail, where he was detained since Tuesday. A detention hearing, to decide whether he will remain in custody, is set to take place within five business days. During the brief court appearance, Busfield made no comments and did not enter a plea. A preliminary hearing has been arranged for January 29.
The arrest warrant for Busfield was issued by Albuquerque police last week, citing two counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor and one count of child abuse. The incidents are said to have occurred on the set of the TV series “The Cleaning Lady,” filmed in Albuquerque.
Married to actor Melissa Gilbert, Busfield, known for his roles in “The West Wing,” “Field of Dreams,” and “Thirtysomething,” has strongly denied the allegations, branding them as falsehoods in a video shared prior to his surrender.
Prosecutors are pushing to keep Busfield in custody until trial, citing a history of sexual misconduct, abuse of power, and grooming behaviors spanning two decades. They express concerns about witness fears of retaliation and professional repercussions. Highlighting the potential risks posed by offenders with authority, status, or influence, they argue that no release conditions can adequately protect victims or the community.
The decision on the custody request rests with a judge, and a detention hearing to address this matter is pending. Prosecutors criticized Busfield for sharing a video with TMZ, suggesting a focus on personal narrative control over legal compliance.
According to the criminal complaint, a child reported being touched inappropriately by Busfield on multiple occasions starting at the age of seven. The child’s twin brother also alleged similar encounters. The boys’ mother reported the abuse to authorities, which allegedly occurred between November 2022 and spring 2024.
Busfield denied the accusations during a police interview, attributing them to the mother seeking revenge for her children being replaced on the series. The investigation commenced following a report from a doctor at the University of New Mexico Hospital, prompted by the boys’ parents seeking assistance from a law firm.
While an independent investigation by Warner Bros. found no evidence supporting the claims against Busfield, prosecutors contended that key witnesses were not adequately consulted during the inquiry.
