NHL Satisfied with Milan-Cortina Olympics Arena Tests

Must read

The NHL and NHL Players’ Association expressed satisfaction after observing test events at the new hockey arena for the Milan-Cortina Olympics. Officials from both entities were present at the Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena in Italy for the trial games to evaluate the ice quality and the progress of facility construction. While acknowledging the challenges of using new ice and an incomplete venue, they affirmed their commitment to addressing any remaining issues promptly.

The women’s competition is scheduled to commence on February 5, followed by the men’s event on February 11. International Ice Hockey Federation president Luc Tardif and officials in Milan have conveyed confidence in the participation of NHL players next month, despite concerns arising from the delayed completion of the rink less than a month before the Games.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, after receiving positive feedback from the test events, noted that there are still unfinished aspects due to the ongoing construction and the novelty of the ice surface. He emphasized the league’s readiness to support the organizing committee, the International Olympic Committee, and the International Ice Hockey Federation in delivering top-notch tournament conditions for the world’s elite players.

Although acknowledging that the NHL is not the primary organizer, Bettman reiterated the league’s willingness to provide expertise and assistance as needed. He anticipates gaining a clearer perspective on the situation in Milan upon his arrival, emphasizing the significance of having the best players compete at the Olympics. Ultimately, the decision regarding player participation rests with the IOC and the IIHF.
