“Landfill Search Begins for Ashlee Shingoose’s Remains”

Must read

The official search for Ashlee Shingoose’s remains has commenced at the Brady Road landfill in Winnipeg, confirmed by Premier Wab Kinew. The first truck carrying landfill debris arrived at a search facility where workers will meticulously sift through it for any traces of Shingoose. Kinew expressed hope that they will soon bring her home during a news conference, following a ceremony with Shingoose’s family at the landfill to inaugurate the search.

Shingoose, hailing from St. Theresa Point Anisininew Nation, was identified in March as a victim of a serial killer also responsible for the deaths of Morgan Harris, Marcedes Myran, and Rebecca Contois. She was the first of the four women murdered by Jeremy Skibicki, with her death believed to have occurred in March 2022.

Authorities suspect that Shingoose’s body was disposed of in a garbage bin behind a business on Henderson Highway before being transported to the Brady landfill. The ongoing search involves targeted efforts, with tests conducted to pinpoint the search area and a layer of landfill debris removed for examination.

The operation at Brady Road follows a successful search for the remains of Harris and Myran at the Prairie Green landfill. Premier Kinew highlighted the resemblance in the search process and expressed optimism about locating Shingoose’s remains using the refined procedures tailored for the Brady site.

While the initial search is scheduled for six months, the province is prepared to extend the operation if necessary. Plans are also in place to search for Tanya Nepinak, missing since 2011, at the same landfill. Vernon Mann, Nepinak’s former partner and father of their two children, expressed relief that the search will resume after years of waiting, emphasizing the family’s eagerness to finally bring her home.

The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Grand Chief Kyra Wilson emphasized the commitment to find Nepinak’s remains, ensuring continuous efforts until she is located. Wilson highlighted the shift in government dedication towards missing persons cases, reflecting a more resolute stance in the ongoing search missions.

The community stands united in supporting the search endeavors, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in these crucial undertakings.
