Several communities on Manitoulin Island are still under a State of Emergency due to flooding, while areas like Greater Sudbury and North Bay in northeastern Ontario are also dealing with rising water levels as a significant part of the region remains under flood advisories.

Jason Bresolin, a resident in the Coniston area of Greater Sudbury, reports flooding in his street with over 15 centimeters of water in his basement.

Carl Jorgensen, general manager of Conservation Sudbury, mentioned that a significant winter storm in March increased the snowpack in the region.

“Compared to previous years, we have about twice the amount of water in the snowpack that is now melting,” he explained.

He added that many of the river systems’ headwaters are still snow-covered in the north, leading to a slower snowmelt.

Jorgensen anticipates that this week’s flooding in Greater Sudbury will surpass the high water levels seen in 2023.

“Water levels are on the rise,” he emphasized.

Environment Canada forecasts temperatures above freezing in various areas of the region in the upcoming days.

Conservation Sudbury remains in constant communication with the City of Greater Sudbury and other partners as necessary.

The authority continues to monitor water levels and will provide updates as needed.
