“Saskatchewan Braces for Spring Snowstorm Chaos”

Must read

Another spring snowstorm is forecasted to impact portions of Saskatchewan today, with a caution for people to refrain from traveling in certain areas due to erratic winds, heavy snowfall, and reduced visibility. The anticipated snow accumulation ranges between 10 and 15 centimeters across the province, with localized areas expecting up to 25 centimeters.

Danielle Desjardins, a warning preparedness meteorologist at Environment and Climate Change Canada, mentioned, “West-central Saskatchewan, extending to the North Battleford-Kindersley vicinity, is currently experiencing significant snowfall.” She further added, “The most intense snow band is concentrated around Moose Jaw, Regina, and eastward along the Trans-Canada Highway. These regions are expected to receive the highest snowfall rates and accumulations.”

Travel advisories are in place for a large part of the province, with several road closures northeast of Regina, such as Highway 11 leading to Bethune. Desjardins also noted the presence of ice pellets mixed with precipitation in the southeast, with a continued risk of freezing rain. The heaviest precipitation is projected to subside by evening, followed by lingering light flurries overnight into Friday.

Pamela Ecklund, managing a convenience store at the intersection of Trans-Canada and Highway 9 in Whitewood, shared their hope to avoid snow and possibly receive rain, only to wake up to an unexpected snowfall. Ecklund emphasized caution for drivers, particularly with expectations of heavier snowfall later in the day.

Kim Audette, commuting from Moose Jaw to Regina, humorously blamed those who stored away their snow shovels prematurely for the current conditions. Anastasia Dubois, navigating the challenging commute to Regina, shared her experience of driving in the inclement weather with a mix of determination and humor.

Desjardins expressed a tentative optimism that this snowstorm might mark the end of the season, foreseeing a shift to warmer temperatures in the upcoming week.
