A tragic incident unfolded at a ski resort in the Canadian Rockies this past weekend, resulting in the death of a woman who fell into deep snow. The Sunshine Village Ski Resort confirmed the fatality on Monday, revealing that the 47-year-old woman from Toronto lost her life while skiing on Saturday afternoon. The unfortunate accident occurred when she tumbled into a pocket of thick, fresh snow just off the side of a beginner-level ski run known as Banff Avenue.
Despite efforts by the ski patrol members to revive the woman on-site for a period of two hours, their attempts proved unsuccessful. Tragically, individuals caught in similar circumstances, such as deep snow immersion, can face a fatal outcome as they become immobilized and trapped beneath the snow, ultimately succumbing to suffocation. The deceased woman’s body has been transported to Calgary for a comprehensive autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Kendra Scurfield, a spokesperson for Sunshine Village, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to the woman’s family on Monday. The Banff Avenue ski run, classified as a green run denoting its moderate difficulty level, is situated in the lower mountain area of the resort.
This incident occurred amidst Sunshine Village experiencing its fourth snowiest season on record this winter, adding a somber note to the otherwise snowy conditions at the resort.
