The orchestrator of the most infamous gang murder in British Columbia has been freed after serving his term for involvement in a murder conspiracy. Jamie Bacon, the former leader of the Red Scorpions gang, received an 18-year prison sentence in September 2020 for his role in the 2007 “Surrey Six” killings. Following credit for pre-trial detention, his total sentence equated to an additional five years and seven months. The release of Bacon was confirmed by the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU), with specific conditions and a curfew in place.
Bacon will be under supervision by Alberta provincial corrections officials and local law enforcement in Edmonton, as stated by CFSEU spokesperson Sgt. Sarbjit Sangha. The tragic events of the 2007 murders at Surrey’s Balmoral apartment complex involved Bacon’s associates targeting gang rival Corey Lal. Justice Kathleen Ker described Bacon’s sinister plot to eliminate Lal due to a drug line dispute, leading to the fatal Surrey Six incident.
Christopher Mohan’s mother, Eileen Mohan, expressed her discontent with Bacon’s release, emphasizing the impact of her son’s loss and the necessity for reform in the justice system. Despite initially facing a first-degree murder charge, Bacon reached a plea agreement, pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit murder in the Surrey Six case and to counseling murder in a separate incident. Mohan stressed the importance of balancing victims’ rights with those of offenders and urged for stricter measures against individuals like Bacon with a history of violent behavior.
Official documents from the Parole Board of Canada revealed Bacon’s denial of statutory release in 2024 due to his criminal history and violent tendencies. A subsequent ruling in January 2026 upheld this decision, citing ongoing violent behavior and a high risk of reoffending. Bacon was ultimately released on a peace bond after serving his complete sentence period. The Surrey Six case involved convictions of six individuals, including Cody Haevischer and the late Matthew Johnston, who received life sentences in 2014. Haevischer’s appeal continues, challenging claims of police misconduct and in-custody mistreatment.
