Spring weather in certain areas of Alberta is being disrupted by heavy snow and rain. Environment Canada has issued rainfall warnings for eastern Alberta, covering regions from Lac La Biche and Cold Lake down to Hardisty and Provost. Additionally, a snowfall warning is in place for the northeast of the province, spanning approximately 150 kilometers south of Fort McMurray up to Fort Chipewyan.
The forecast predicts heavy rain with total amounts of 25 to 30 millimeters in eastern Alberta. According to Environment Canada meteorologist Terri Lang, the rainfall will intensify throughout the day, with the heaviest precipitation expected during the day and into the evening. The transition to snow is anticipated overnight.
Due to the ground not being fully thawed, there is a risk of localized flooding in the region. Residents are advised to steer clear of low-lying areas and remain vigilant for potential washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts. Lang highlighted that frozen ground or existing snow cover may prevent rain from seeping into the ground, causing runoff.
In the northeast region, between 25 and 30 centimeters of snowfall is forecasted by Friday, with lighter snow persisting into the weekend. Travel conditions are likely to be challenging in these areas, especially during the overnight period and Thursday, as stated by Lang.
Despite the desire for warmer temperatures, the current weather conditions serve as a reminder of how swiftly winter conditions can reappear in Alberta. Lang emphasized the volatile nature of spring weather in the region, indicating that snowfall remains a possibility despite the anticipation of nicer weather.
