The Winter Paralympics will see Russian and Belarusian athletes competing under their respective national flags and anthems, as confirmed by the President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), Andrew Parsons. The decision, made at the IPC General Assembly, sparked controversy due to tensions surrounding Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
Parsons emphasized that the allocation of 10 slots to Russian and Belarusian athletes stands and cannot be reversed. Following the announcement, Ukraine declared a boycott of the opening ceremony in Verona on March 6, with the Czech Paralympic Committee and some Polish officials also showing solidarity by refraining from attending.
Despite the boycotts, Parsons encouraged Ukrainian athletes to participate, highlighting the values of inclusion and diversity. While concerns were raised about potential further withdrawals from other countries, Parsons noted that the IPC had not received any official communication regarding this issue.
Russia and Belarus have been granted slots in various Paralympic disciplines, with Russia receiving spots in Para Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding, while Belarus secured places in cross-country skiing. The decision faced opposition from the Italian government, which called for a reversal.
Parsons acknowledged the differing positions but stressed the importance of providing athletes with the best possible competitive environment. The Winter Paralympics are scheduled to take place from March 6 to March 15.
