An Air India pilot was taken into custody at Vancouver International Airport last week during pre-flight preparations, prompting Transport Canada to caution the airline about potential flight authorization repercussions for failing to adhere to alcohol consumption regulations. According to Transport Canada, the incident occurred on Dec. 23, and the authorities will collaborate with Air India and Indian aviation authorities to ensure appropriate follow-up measures are implemented.
Richmond RCMP confirmed that the pilot’s arrest followed a reported concern regarding an airline crew member. An airport spokesperson disclosed that the pilot was getting ready for Air India’s daily flight from Vancouver to Delhi. Despite a delay of several hours, the flight eventually departed safely.
Law enforcement mentioned that an ongoing investigation is in progress, with no additional details being disclosed at this time. Air India has not yet responded to requests for comments. Transport Canada emphasized that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of India holds the primary responsibility for overseeing Air India’s regulatory compliance.
Transport Canada reiterated that Canadian aviation regulations strictly prohibit pilots and crew members from performing duties within 12 hours of consuming alcohol or while under its influence. It warned that airlines must not assign unfit crew members for duty, as non-compliance could lead to the suspension or revocation of flight authorizations, along with potential legal consequences.
