President Trump also mentioned that the women’s hockey team, victorious over Canada with a 2-1 score in overtime, will have their White House visit soon. However, the women’s team decided not to attend the state of the union due to scheduling conflicts.
The team members of the men’s hockey team walked through the House chamber amidst cheers and chants of “U.S.A.!” from lawmakers on both sides. There was a lot of excitement, with many even raising their fists in support.
During the visit, Rep. Lisa McClain, the Republican House Conference Chair, expressed her admiration by shouting “Love you!” to the players.
Trump expressed his gratitude to the players, praising their achievements and calling them exceptional champions.
Furthermore, Trump announced that goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who played a crucial role in the gold medal game by stopping 41 shots, will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the country. Hellebuyck, a player for the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets, was visibly touched by the recognition.
