A 21-year-old Austrian man, identified as Beran A., admitted to supporting the Islamic State group and conspiring to target a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna almost two years ago. The trial, which commenced on Tuesday, saw the defendant plead guilty to charges linked to the plot surrounding the August 2024 concert. As a precaution, three scheduled shows by Swift were called off.
Facing accusations of terrorist offenses and involvement in a terrorist organization, Beran A. could potentially receive a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. Alongside him in the trial was Arda K., whose full name remains undisclosed. The two, along with a third individual, had planned coordinated attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan in 2024 under the banner of the Islamic State. However, Beran A. and Arda K. did not execute their intended assaults.
Beran A.’s defense lawyer, Anna Mair, confirmed that her client intended to plead guilty to most charges without specifying the details. The defendant, solely implicated in the Taylor Swift plot, aimed to target the massive crowds outside the Ernst Happel Stadium. He allegedly planned to use knives or homemade explosives to cause harm to the concert attendees, hoping to inflict significant casualties. Authorities revealed that Beran A. had communicated with other Islamic State members to procure weapons and create bombs, in addition to attempting illegal weapon purchases leading up to the performance. Authorities discovered bomb-making materials during a search of his residence on August 7, 2024, just a day before the first Swift concert in the country.
The cancellations of the concerts, prompted by U.S. intelligence, left fans disappointed, including those who had traveled from abroad to attend the shows. Swift expressed her sorrow over the cancellations in a later Instagram post, conveying her fear and guilt for the disrupted plans of her fans. The aftermath of the cancellations saw fans transforming Vienna into a citywide hub for exchanging friendship bracelets and engaging in singalongs.
The Vienna plot drew parallels to a tragic incident in 2017 when a suicide bomber attacked an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England, resulting in 22 fatalities. Prosecutors have also leveled terrorism charges against Arda K. concerning the planned attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the U.A.E. The third individual involved in the scheme, Hasan E., allegedly assaulted a security guard at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, in March 2024. Hasan E. was apprehended and remains in custody in Saudi Arabia. Despite their plans in Turkey and the U.A.E. not coming to fruition, Beran A. returned to Vienna and initiated plans to target a Swift concert there.
