Residents of Star Blanket Cree Nation recently witnessed the reintroduction of bison to their community, marking a significant milestone. Located approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Regina, community members gathered over the snowy May long weekend to welcome the bison to their lands. Sharon Strongarm, who attended the release with her grandchildren, expressed the emotional significance of the event, emphasizing the spiritual connection to their heritage.
Ariane Starblanket, the community navigator and project manager for the bison release, shared that the initiative stemmed from her late grandfather’s dream of restoring bison to the community for healing and food sovereignty. The project, initially part of community safety plan initiatives, evolved to involve youth in caring for the bison, emphasizing cultural restoration and land stewardship.
Tristan Starr-Desnomie, selected as one of the bison keepers, highlighted the honor of his role and the unique care requirements for the bison compared to other livestock. As the bison settle into their new home, caretakers like Austin Elliott noted the calm demeanor of the animals, signaling a positive adjustment period.
Looking ahead, the community plans to expand the bison’s habitat with the goal of eventually utilizing them as a vital resource for food, clothing, and medicine. The return of the bison holds educational value for the community, fostering a sense of empowerment and cultural preservation for future generations.
