“ʔAkisq̓nuk First Nation Launches Lake Conservation Initiative”

Must read

The ʔAkisq̓nuk First Nation is initiating a series of scientific and economic investigations on Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake as part of a wider water conservation strategy, sparking discussions on recreational boating in the region.

“Stewardship holds significant importance for the Ktunaxa people,” shared ʔAkisq̓nuk Chief (Nasuʔkin) Donald Sam during an interview with CBC’s Daybreak South. He emphasized the necessity of credible data for decision-making processes.

The First Nation has allocated $200,000 for mapping the East Kootenay lakes, evaluating shoreline conditions, sediment movements, and gauging the economic significance of recreational activities in the area.

The stewardship talks have raised concerns among residents, fearing potential restrictions that could impact the local economy negatively.

Chief Sam clarified that the focus is not against economic growth, debunking misconceptions that the goal is to eliminate boating activities. Rather, the objective is to determine sustainable recreational practices conducive to the long-term health of the lakes.

The studies are conducted in the midst of escalating scrutiny toward wake-surfing boats, known for generating larger wakes through ballast systems. Critics argue these boats disturb sediment, harm shorelines, and contribute to environmental deterioration in smaller lakes like Windermere and Columbia.

Mayor Al Miller of the District of Invermere expressed support for a science-based approach to address the issue, emphasizing the need to balance economic considerations with environmental preservation in decision-making processes.

Chief Sam emphasized that the stewardship planning is at an early stage, assuring that no immediate restrictions are under consideration for the current summer season. He highlighted the importance of community engagement and information sharing throughout the process.

The ultimate goal is to develop a comprehensive lake stewardship strategy that harmonizes environmental protection with economic well-being, aiming for a balanced approach that ensures a sustainable future for the lakes and their surroundings.
