“Father-Son Duo Revive Art of Letter Writing with ‘Once Upon a Letter'”

Must read

Chris Heil, a resident of St. Thomas, Ontario, reminisces about the days when he exchanged letters with his wife while studying out West due to the high cost of cellphones. Reflecting on the profound communication conveyed through letters and the excitement of awaiting replies, he now embarks on a unique business venture alongside his son.

In August 2025, Heil noticed a growing demand for meaningful, screen-free entertainment that carries a personal touch. This realization led to the establishment of “Once Upon a Letter,” a business that immerses readers in the lives of fictional characters through a storytelling experience delivered via mail.

Transitioning from a creative side project to a full-fledged storytelling enterprise, Heil and his son, Zachary Paquin, decided to pursue this venture after Paquin was laid off from a job in Alberta’s oilsands. Subscribers to the service receive a letter every two weeks for a full year.

The current narrative, set against the backdrop of the final year of World War II, portrays a romantic exchange of letters between Canadian soldier Edward Bennett, deployed in Europe, and his wife Margaret residing in Halifax. The story unfolds through their heartfelt correspondence, supplemented with photographs and historical insights.

The duo faces the challenge of assuming the personas of diverse characters and crafting letters in their voices, a process that involves thorough feedback and editing from their circle. The stories have resonated well, particularly with the older demographic accustomed to letter writing, prompting interest from both Canadian and American audiences.

While emphasizing Canadian themes, Heil and Paquin contemplate expanding their reach, considering international shipping options in the upcoming year.
