Wojtowicz, who is recovering from a gambling addiction, revealed that he often feels tempted to download betting apps on his phone due to the pervasive nature of these ads. Despite abstaining from gambling for almost three years, Wojtowicz lamented that sports betting promotions are omnipresent, leading him to actively avoid them during commercial breaks.

In an effort to shed light on the struggles faced by individuals grappling with gambling addiction in the face of a deluge of online betting advertisements, Wojtowicz shared his personal journey with CBC. The surge in sports betting advertisements sweeping across Canada, even in regions where they lack licensing, has been attributed to the legalization of single-event sports betting and the emergence of private sportsbooks in Ontario. Bruce Kidd, the chair of the Campaign to Ban Ads for Gambling, criticized Canadian authorities for fostering an unregulated market flooded with gambling ads without adequate restrictions.

Matthew Young, a senior research associate at the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction, highlighted the escalation of gambling ads nationwide, partly driven by competition from Ontario’s regulated market. Young emphasized the need to evaluate the undisclosed costs associated with this advertising proliferation, citing a rise in calls related to online gaming issues to the Problem Gambling Helpline.

Wojtowicz shared the detrimental impact of his gambling addiction, which strained his relationships and led to criminal activities. He underscored the constant temptation posed by the legalization of single-event sports betting in Canada, which facilitated round-the-clock access to gambling opportunities.

Efforts are underway to address the adverse effects of excessive gambling advertisements. Senator Marty Deacon has championed a bill calling for a national framework to regulate sports betting advertising, advocating for a balanced approach that safeguards public health while accommodating individuals’ betting preferences. Additionally, legislative measures are being considered at the provincial level to combat illegal betting platforms and mitigate revenue losses attributed to unlicensed operators.

Glen Simard, overseeing Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, acknowledged challenges in restricting unlicensed betting ads during major events like the Grey Cup. Collaborative initiatives between Manitoba and British Columbia entities aim to raise awareness about the risks associated with unregulated online gambling, with a focus on dissuading individuals from engaging with illegal operators.

Despite the hurdles posed by pervasive gambling advertising, Wojtowicz has found solace in diverting his attention to alternative activities like puzzles, fitness, and nature walks to steer clear of gambling temptations. Reflecting on his journey, Wojtowicz now serves as a peer supporter to offer guidance and hope to others struggling with addiction, emphasizing the importance of honesty and self-renewal in his recovery journey.
