Hungary’s Election Upheaval: Von der Leyen Hails Victory

Must read

European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised Hungary’s recent election as a triumph for fundamental freedoms and drew parallels between the removal of nationalist Viktor Orbán and significant historical events in Hungarian history. The victory of the center-right opposition, led by Péter Magyar, in Hungary’s election has caused a political earthquake, garnering attention globally. Von der Leyen commended the Hungarian people for their resilience, likening their current actions to the courageous stands taken in 1956 and 1989.

Orbán, who was a key ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the European Union, consistently adopted confrontational stances within the EU and NATO, impeding support for Ukraine. Following accusations against Ukraine, Orbán blocked a substantial EU loan to the country. Magyar, who was formerly associated with Orbán’s party, emphasized Hungary’s shift towards a pro-European direction post-election, highlighting the country’s affirmation of its place within Europe.

Despite this, Magyar clarified that his government would not advocate for Ukraine’s swift accession to the European Union. He expressed willingness to engage with Putin, focusing on ending the ongoing conflict and promoting peace. The landslide victory of Magyar’s coalition allows for potential constitutional amendments, including limiting a prime minister’s tenure to two terms, signifying a reform-minded approach.

International leaders, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, congratulated Magyar on his win, heralding a new chapter for Hungary and Europe. Former U.S. President Barack Obama acknowledged the significance of the opposition’s victory, highlighting its broader implications for global democracy. The Trump administration’s prior support for Orbán contrasted with the prevailing sentiment following Magyar’s election success.

While reactions varied globally, with some applauding the outcome and others reflecting on the implications, Hungary’s geopolitical stance under Magyar’s leadership is poised for change. The Kremlin expressed respect for Hungary’s decision, indicating a desire to maintain cooperative relations with the country’s new leadership.
