Imprisoned Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner, Narges Mohammadi, was recently transported from prison to a hospital due to a severe heart condition, as stated by her brother to Reuters on Monday. Mohammadi, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 while incarcerated for her advocacy for women’s rights and the abolition of the death penalty in Iran, experienced a suspected heart attack in late March. She was admitted to a hospital in northwestern Iran on May 1 due to her deteriorating health.
According to her brother, Hamidreza Mohammadi, Narges is experiencing intense headaches, nausea, and chest pain, raising concerns about her heart condition. The current provincial hospital where she is receiving treatment lacks the necessary resources to provide adequate care. Medical experts have warned that her life is at risk and she urgently requires at least a month away from prison conditions for proper medical attention from her specialized doctors.
Both Mohammadi’s family and the Norwegian Nobel Committee have urged the Iranian authorities to transfer her to her medical team in Tehran for treatment. Describing his sister as resilient and unyielding, Hamidreza emphasized Narges’s strength in the face of adversity, highlighting her refusal to be broken by the regime.
Amid the ongoing conflict with the U.S. and Israel, communication with family members in Iran has become challenging. Hamidreza expressed the urgent need for global attention to shift towards the Iranian people’s plight and human rights in Iran, emphasizing the critical situation faced by many individuals in the country.
